Statement by Hikmat Hajiyev,Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Statement by Hikmat Hajiyev,Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As stated by the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on February 25 at midnight, the armed forces of Armenia made an attempt to penetrate into the positions of the armed forces of Azerbaijan with the aim of conducting large-scale provocation on the frontline and trying to seize advantageous positions in Khojavand-Fizuli direction of the front.

The escalation of the situation in the front and perpetration of military provocations are continuation of Armenia’s political provocations as holding of illegal “referendum” in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan on February 20, 2017. The political and military provocations of Armenia are aimed at deliberate escalation of the situation and undermining the efforts for solution of conflict via the substantive talks, diverting the attention of the international community in the eve of Khojaly genocide from the responsibilities borne by Armenia for Khojaly and strengthening already lost social support base and position of Armenia’s ruling regime in forthcoming parliamentary elections in Armenia.

Azerbaijani side has repeatedly emphasized that the illegal presence of armed forces of Armenia in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan remains the prime reason for the escalation of the situation. The events occurred in April last year proved it over again. The international community and particularly the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs at the Heads of State level on many occasions stated that the status quo is unacceptable and unsustainable and it must be changed.

With a view of preventing the escalation of situation and changing the status of quo of occupation and ensuring sustainable peace in the region, full and unconditional withdrawal of the armed forces of Armenia from all occupied territories of Azerbaijan has to be provided based on the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

Instigator of the escalation of situation in the front is Armenia and thereby, all responsibility falls on political-military leadership of Armenia.

27th Anniversary of the “Black January” tragedy

On January 20, 1990, 26,000 troops under orders from the Soviet leadership in Moscow invaded Baku, killing hundreds of innocent civilians and injuring over thousand, and setting in motion the events which led to Azerbaijan’s independence a year and a half later.

The invasion was launched at midnight and committed with ferocity and no mercy for children, women and elderly. The Human Rights Watch reported that ‘among the most heinous violations of human rights during the Baku incursion were the numerous attacks on medical personnel, ambulances and even hospitals’.

The significance of the “Black January” for the eventual collapse of the USSR cannot be overestimated. Peaceful demonstrations had been taking place for several weeks in downtown Baku, protesting the Soviet control of Azerbaijan. In fact, Azerbaijan was the first among the former Soviet republics to mount a serious move toward independence, and it was the prospect of a breakup of the Soviet empire that prompted Mikhail Gorbachev to send both armored troops and KGB officials to Baku. Despite the bloodshed, the Soviet leadership was unable to stop the quest for freedom of the Azerbaijani people.  In 1991, Azerbaijan finally restored its independence.

Each year the people of Azerbaijan commemorate the Black January and pay tribute to the memory of the victims of this tragedy. May the souls of the martyrs of the Azerbaijani freedom rest in peace!

Azerbaijani wine has a unique individuality, delicate aroma and smooth taste – There are about 450 local grape varieties

azerbaijanivineGrape has been known for thousands of years in all the Mediterranean countries, but few know that seeds found in Uzerliktepe monument in the vicinities of Agdam are 3,500 years old, thus proving that inhabitants of this locality were engaged in winegrowing.

Azerbaijan is an ancient land of winegrowing. Due to the favorable natural-climatic condition, numerous sorts of grape have been developed here.

In the past century the wine industry in Azerbaijan went through good times, being an independent and dynamic field. In addition to well-known grape varieties, local sorts were also grown here, which were in great demand abroad.

More than 120 plants for the primary processing of grapes, as well as some wine plants operated throughout the country. Farmers harvested about 2.136 million tons of grape from 274 million hectares of vineyards. Suffice it to say one fact, one fith of wine production in the former Soviet Union was accounted for the share of Azerbaijan.

Production of the plant was designed not only for domestic but also for the external market. However, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, as well as other objective reasons contributed to the collapse of this profitable field, once comparable to the oil industry of the country.

In 1985, as a result of anti-alcohol campaign conducted in the Soviet Union at the initiative of Mikhail Gorbachev, Azerbaijan was forced to cut down not only the plantation with technical varieties of grape, but also with unique table grapes. Since this year, the vineyards were uprooted in the area of more than 130,000 hectares.

Grapes grown in Azerbaijan, were repeatedly recognized as the best in the South Caucasus.

Despite winemaking does not occupy one of the leading places in the national economy today, the field is experiencing a renaissance in general.

Any Azerbaijani wine has a unique individuality, delicate aroma and smooth taste. There are about 450 local grape varieties.

Local grape varieties in Azerbaijan include White Shani, Derbendi, Nail, Bayanshire, Gamashara, Ganja Pink, Bendi, Madrasa, Black Shani, Zeynabi, Misgali, Khindogni, Agdam Kechiemdzheyi, Tebrizi, and Marandi.

Among the grape sorts used to produce Azerbaijani wine are Pinot Noir, Rkatsiteli, Pinot Blanc, Aligote, Matrassa, Podarok Magaracha, Pervenets Magaracha, Ranni Magaracha, Doina, Viorica, and Kishmish Moldavski.

Azerbaijan has every natural conditions-mountainous terrain and close location to the Caspian Sea for the development and expansion of winemaking.

Chairman of the Free Consumers Union Eyyub Huseynov said that the national wines can become a global brand.

“Azerbaijan cultivates the most quality and rarest grape varieties. Natural climate, fertile land favor for the development of wine-growing field. Moreover modern plants are operating for the production of wine. There is only one drawback — lack of PR,” he said.

Huseynov noted that Georgian and Armenian wines are more valued than Azerbaijan in the world and Europe.

“If we compare these products, the Azerbaijani wine will be much better and more delicious than Georgian and Armenian wines. And there is a logical explanation: Azerbaijani wines are made of the best grapes, which are grown in the vast fields of the country,” he emphasized.

Azerbaijan exports wines to Russia, Ukraine, Baltic States, Poland, Belarus and the UAE and China. More and more countries, for instance France, are showing interest in the national brandy, who buy this stuff here.

Azerbaijan became a member of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine in June 2014. The country has focused since then on the development of vines and wineries as important contributors to the economy and agriculture.

Local experts noted that the government has devoted considerable effort to creating the Caspian Coast wine trademark and has invested heavily in advertising the brand outside Azerbaijan. The ministries of agriculture and economy and industry are working to develop a wine culture programme and to reduce the production of spirits in the country over 2012 to 2020.

Experts advise that the programme should expand the country’s wine-producing areas, organize new wineries in rural areas and initiate the export of Azerbaijani wine to European markets. The ministries are supporting local winemakers by offering them long-term loans to modernize their manufacturing facilities and increase their production capacities.

Azerbaijan celebrates Independence Day

Happy Independence Day, Azerbaijan!

flagofazerbaijan

October 18 – is marked as the State Independence Day in Azerbaijan.

Thanks to favorable historical condition established after collapse of the Soviet Union in late 20th century Azerbaijani people gained its independence in the 20th century for the second time. It was the second prominent achievement in Azerbaijani people’s political history.

As a result of the activity of the democratic powers in Russia it was impossible to suppress non-subordination to the central power and independence wish in the republic.

At the extraordinary meeting called under the people’s will on June 30, 1991, the Supreme Council of the Azerbaijani Republic adopted a declaration about restoration of Azerbaijan’s state independence. Constitutional Act “About the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan'” was adopted at the session of the Supreme Council of the Azerbaijani Republic on Oct.18, 1991.

The referendum was held in Azerbaijan on Dec.29. The referendum’s bulletin reflected a question: “Do you support the Constitutional Act “About the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan” adopted by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan?” The Azerbaijan people unanimously supported the state independence. In May 1992

Azerbaijani parliament adopted the State Hymn (music by Uzeyir Hajibeyov, words by Ahmed Javad) of the Azerbaijan Republic and soon after it, three colored flag and the state anthem in the form of eight-point star with fire in the centre of it.

Azerbaijan is an independent and a sovereign state since Oct.18, 1991 and people celebrate it as a holiday. Independence Day is a working day in Azerbaijan.
