A visa-free regime between Azerbaijan and the EU is possible

A visa-free regime between Azerbaijan and the EU is possible, EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Herbert Salber, who visited Azerbaijan, told Trend Apr. 21.

Before a visa-free regime is gained between the EU and Azerbaijan, a number of procedures and technical issues should be discussed, he said.

“It is hard to say now when it will happen, but we are now at the very early stage of this consideration,” he added.

Earlier, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Hikmat Hajiyev said that abolition of visas for Azerbaijani citizens is one of the topics of discussions between Baku and Brussels.

“New agreement between the two sides will be comprehensive,” Salber further said of the new Azerbaijan-EU agreement. “It will include not only political issues, but also trade, energy, some other specific issues.”

“We are glad that the negotiations have been launched and we hope they could be concluded within this year,” he said, adding this will build a solid basis for future cooperation between two sides.

The European Council adopted a mandate for the European Commission and the high representative for foreign affairs and security policy to negotiate, on behalf of the EU and its member states, a comprehensive agreement with Azerbaijan in November 2016.

The new agreement should replace the 1996 partnership and cooperation agreement and should better take account of the shared objectives and challenges the EU and Azerbaijan face today.

The agreement will follow the principles endorsed in the 2015 review of the European Neighborhood Policy and offer a renewed basis for political dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan.

Silk Way Airlines expands fleet, actively develops and strengthens business relations with both US private companies and public sector since 2005

Azal

An official ceremony of arrival of a new Boeing 747-8F aircraft, which belongs to the Azerbaijani cargo airline Silk Way Airlines, was held at Heydar Aliyev International Airport on April 7.

President of CJSC Azerbaijan Airlines Jahangir Asgarov, President of Silk Way Holding Zaur Akhundov, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the United States to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta, Economic Section Chief at the U.S. Embassy Carter Wilbur and others attended the event.

The aircraft became already the tenth aircraft of the Boeing type for Silk Way Airlines and the fifth Boeing 747-8F, which will be operated by the airline.

Thus, the arrival of the aircraft marked the successful completion of the first phase of a large-scale cooperation program between Silk Way Airlines and Boeing Corporation.

The total cost of purchased aircrafts under the program amounted to about 1 billion US dollars, which is the largest project in the history of Azerbaijani private enterprises’ development and activity.

Silk Way Airlines actively develops and strengthens business relations with both US private companies and public sector since 2005.

Silk Way Airlines is one of the air carriers recognized and certified by the appropriate US authorities.

Close cooperation with US TRANSCOM (the United States Transportation Command) allowed the airline to carry out transportation orders on all important destinations, including Iraq and Afghanistan.

The delivery of the new aircraft will enable Silk Way Airlines to expand the geography of flights, increase the volume of the cargo transported, and cover new segments of the air transportation market. This will also allow the airline to reduce the operating costs of the aggregate fleet of aircrafts and, as a result, to increase the profitability as a whole.

With the expansion of the fleet of aircrafts, Silk Way Airlines plans to open new flights to Tokyo, Djibouti, Nairobi and Dhaka along with the existing direct regular cargo flights from Azerbaijani capital to the cities of New York, Chicago, Milan, Luxembourg, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Dubai, Seoul, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Over the past 10 years, the Heydar Aliyev International Airport has become a major air cargo logistic center. Today, Azerbaijan’s civil aviation has announced itself as the official air carrier of the Great Silk Road project connecting East and West.

Purchasing of new wide-body long-haul Boeing 747-8F aircrafts, well-established in the freight market, is an important part of the implementation of this strategy.

A growing number of people keep joining the Armenia-Azerbaijan Platform for Peace, created by Azerbaijan to accelerate the process of peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through the people’s diplomacy

A growing number of people keep joining the Armenia-Azerbaijan Platform for Peace, created by Azerbaijan to accelerate the process of peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through the people’s diplomacy.

President of the International Sustainable Energy Organization (ISEO) Gustav R. Grob made a statement on March 30 about his joining the Platform.

“After centuries of hatred and wars it is time for world-wide peace, tolerance and fruitful cooperation,” his statement reads.

Grob expressed his respect and support to territorial integrity, sovereignty and internationally recognized borders of the conflicting countries and added that he believes in peaceful solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

He also emphasized the necessity of implementation of resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council, as well as resolutions and decisions of different international organizations.

“I would like to note the importance of efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group regarding the settlement of the conflict,” Grob stated.

Referring to the long tradition of coexistence of the peoples of Azerbaijan and Armenia, he noted with regret that the young generations in both countries have formed their perception about each other in the context of war resulting from the unresolved conflict.

“Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Platform” is a unique opportunity to a fast peaceful resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” Grob stated.

The Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Platform was founded on December 6 in Baku 2016 by a group of Azerbaijani and Armenian public figures and peacekeepers. It was created to bring together representatives of civil society of the two countries for creating dialogue between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the sides to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

However, this initiative was negatively perceived by the Armenian government, which started persecution of those Armenians who joined the Platform.

Chairman of Arabian Platform for Renewable and Efficient Energy and of Tunisian organization Women for Sustainable Development, Kamel Esseghairi also made a statement about joining the Armenia-Azerbaijan Platform for Peace.

He also highlighted the necessity of implementing the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council and other international organizations and recalled the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group.

“I believe that this initiative will contribute to the solution of the conflict. Therefore, I make a statement about joining the Armenia-Azerbaijan Platform for Peace, which is aimed at a peaceful settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and restoring and preserving peace in South Caucasus,” Esseghairi writes.

Thus, the Platform for Peace is gaining strength as increasing number of people from around the world, including Armenia, joins it. Apart from the official negotiations of the presidents and foreign ministers of the conflicting countries, the people’s diplomacy is of high importance, and this has been stated by many international experts.
