Azerbaijan’s Minister of Defense Safar Abiyev has met U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel as part of his visit to Washington,
Mr. Hagel praised Azerbaijan for its support to the efforts in Afghanistan including their sustained deployment with the International Security Assistance Force. In addition, he thanked Minister Abiyev for the valuable role Azerbaijan plays in providing land, air and sea transit access for logistics support to Afghanistan.
They agreed to continue to work together on issues including North Atlantic Treaty Organization interoperability, counterterrorism, defense transformation and maritime security.
Secretary Hagel and Minister Abiyev also discussed the current situation in the region. Hagel praised the recent inauguration of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and reiterated that it is imperative that Iran take quick steps to resolve the international community’s deep concerns over its nuclear program.
The U.S. Secretary of Defense said he recognizes Azerbaijan’s role in fostering regional security and stability, and looks forward to continuing the strategic partnership.
