This Spring, the San Francisco World Music Festival comes to Stanford campus, introducing students to the world of Azerbaijani music and culture. Festival co-director and Azeri master musician, Imamyar Hasanov, and Azeri music specialist Krystal Barghelame (Stanford ’08) will teach students to play and appreciate Azerbaijani music. Harnessing the festival’s unique multimedia and interdisciplinary approach to music production, the course is a joint workshop and seminar supplemented by guest performers and live video interviews with musicians living across the globe. Students bring their instruments of choice (including voice) to learn Azeri music, with no previous knowledge of the tradition required. The course hopes to inspire students to engage with new music traditions within a globalized context. As a culminating project, the class will produce a final multimedia event.
