A protest against Azerbaijan’s Aliyev regime was held in New York in front of the United Nations headquarters. The protest was organized by a group of Azerbaijani-Americans and Azerbaijani students studying in the US. The event in New York was held in solidarity with the same day protest rally in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku, where police attacked hundreds of demonstrators with rubber bullets, water cannons, and truncheons.

One of the organizers of the New York protest, Emil Ismayil, read the resolution on behalf of the rally’s participants:

“On March 10, Azerbaijani-Americans and Azerbaijani students studying in the US have gathered in front of the United Nations headquarters to raise our voice against the repressive tactics Ilham Aliyev regime. We demand freedom for all political prisoners in Azerbaijan, end to persecution of youth activists, end to deaths of Azerbaijani soldiers in the army and investigation of these deaths, civilian control over military, and the country’s peaceful transition to democracy by holding free and fair elections in October of 2013. We also call on the United Nations and the international community to support the democratic movement in Azerbaijan.”
