Baku to welcome athletes from 50 countries during Islamic Solidarity Games

With over 50 participating countries, from across four continents, the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games is a fantastic opportunity for the people of Azerbaijan to become a part of a major international sporting event, said Azad Rahimov.

The Youth and Sport Minister made the remark at a meeting with members of American Chamber of Commerce in Azerbaijan (AmCham), supported by PwC Azerbaijan.

Rahimov shared the information about the upcoming grand sporting events such as the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games scheduled for May 12-22 and 2017 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix to take place on central streets of Baku on June 23-25.

He emphasized that the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games will see over 5,000 athletes to compete in 20 sports disciplines, while 16 sporting arenas are ready for hosting the competitions.

The minister also highlighted the Athletes Village, which meets all the international standards, and ready to receive the athletes.

“I am convinced that we will witness a grand sporting event,” Rahimov said. “Azerbaijan, as a country that has held a number of significant international sporting events such as the First European Games and Formula 1 at the highest level, will also demonstrate the top level of professionalism during hosting the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games.”

Finally, he mentioned that Azerbaijan will host the European Trampoline Championships in 2018 as decided by the Executive Committee of the European Union of Gymnastics.

Rahimov also thanked AmCham members and guests, voicing his willingness for the further cooperation with the Chamber.

In turn, AmCham Azerbaijan Executive Director Natavan Mammadova updated the participants about the latest and upcoming events, also announced new Tax & Customs and Travel, Hospitality & Tourism committees’ chairmen.

Olga Grygier, PwC leader in Central and Eastern Europe delivered a speech about the economic situation in Europe and Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani Judoka Best in the World

azerbaijancudoThe International Judo Federation has released the results of all national teams for 2016. The results listed the number of medals won by countries. The adult judo team of Azerbaijan has made considerable progress as compared to previous years.

The team led by the Autsrian coach Peter Seisenbacher won 51 awards in competitions of various levels. His clutch includes 14 gold, 10 silver and 27 bronze medals.

The Federation’s results showed that Azerbaijani judokas won 351 times out of 710 fights during the year.

The Azerbaijani judo fighter, silver medalist of Rio-2016 Summer Olympic Games Rustam Orujov was named the best in Azerbaijan’s male team. Moreover, he is the strongest in the world in his weight class of 73kg, as well as among all weight classes. The Federation also pointed out Azerbaijan’s female judoka Aisha Gurbanli (48kg).

The Azerbaijani judo team is considered one of the best in the world. Three Azerbaijani judokas Rustam Orujov, Orkhan Safarov and Elmar Gasimov have topped the International Judo Federation’s world ranking in December.

The Azerbaijani judokas also showed good performance at the Rio-2016, bringing home two silver medals.

Judo is one of the most developed kinds of sport in Azerbaijan. Next year the country’s capital Baku will host the World Judo Championships 2018 among adults.


Azerbaijani Flag Raised in Rio Paralympic Village

flagofazerbaijanA ceremony has been held in the Rio Paralympic village to raise the Azerbaijani tricolor.

Azerbaijan`s hopes will be pinned on 27 paralympic athletes in 6 sports.

The opening ceremony of the Games will be held at the Maracana Stadium on September 7. Two-time Paralympic judo champion, winner of the Baku 2015 European Games Ilham Zakiyev will be Azerbaijan`s flag-bearer at the ceremony.


Azerbaijan’s taekwondo fighter Radik Isayev won an Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro.


Radik Isaev has punched his way into the history books as he became the first Azerbaijani to win an Olympic taekwondo gold at the Rio Games.

He secured the gold medal thanks to a victory over Nigerien Abdoulrazak Issoufou Alfaga in the final.

Azerbaijan now has 15 Olympic medals.


Azerbaijan’s Olympic team departed to Rio de Janeiro with the special charter flight

Azerbaijan’s Olympic team departed to Rio de Janeiro with the special charter flight (J2-5102) of Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) last night.

AZAL plane took off from the Heydar Aliyev International Airport at 01:00 (UTC/GMT +4 hours). The plane is expected to arrive at the Rio de Janeiro airport at 12:00 (UTC/GMT -3 hours) on August 1. Azerbaijan’s national team is expected to return to home at 12:20 (UTC/GMT +4 hours) on August 23.

AZAL has a provided wide-body Airbus A340 plane for transporting the Azerbaijani team to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. All conditions have been created onboard for the comfortable trip of team members, coaching and administrative staffs. The necessary sports and medical equipment will be delivered on the same flight as well.

It is not the first year that AZAL renders services for transportation of the national Olympic team. Aside from that Azerbaijan Airlines has become the general sponsor of Azerbaijan’s Paralympic team in 2016.

Summer Olympic Games will be held in Rio on August 5-21, while the Summer Paralympic Games will take place on September 7-18.

Azerbaijan will be represented by 56 athletes at the Olympic Games – Rio 2016


The Azerbaijani team will be represented at the 31st Summer Olympic Games and 15th Summer Paralympic Games in Rio with 56 athletes, said Azad Rahimov, Minister of Youth and Sports.

Rahimov, addressing a press conference on July 25, said that Azerbaijani people have high expectations on their athletes, adding that Azerbaijani paralympians will also please the nation.

Azerbaijan’s athletes will struggle for Olympic medals in 18 sports, four of which are new to the country. They are triathlon, archery, cycling and canoe slalom.

Rio 2016 will be the first Olympic performance for 36 of 56 Azerbaijani athletes.

Not only athletes will represent the country at the Games in Rio — three referees in wrestling, gymnastics and boxing will also join the Azerbaijani Olympic team. The team will be accompanied by 34 coaches, six doctors, physiotherapists and technical staff. Part of the Azerbaijani team – judokas are already in Brazil.

The sports delegation of Azerbaijan will fly to Rio de Janeiro on August 1 and return home on August 22.

The Azerbaijani team will arrive in Brazil in the morning of August 2 at 09:30 after a 14-hour flight. A day after, a welcoming ceremony of the Azerbaijani athletes as well as the tricolor flag raising ceremony will be held in the Olympic village.

“Our team for Olympics is large, so it will be placed in a separate building in the Olympic village of Rio,” Rahimov said.

The minister further added that the Youth and Sports Ministry presented proposals to the Milli Majlis (Parliament) for a number of changes to the anti-doping legislation.

Under the proposed amendments, forcing to use doping means or methods should be prosecuted along with penalty in the amount of 1,000 to 5,000 manats ($630-3150) or corrective works for a period of two years. If the same actions are committed against minors, deprivation of liberty for a period up to two years is proposed.

For counterfeiting, buying and selling of medicinal drugs and nutrition including doping means there was proposed two years of corrective works or deprivation of liberty for a term up to one year. For the manufacture, production, use and dissemination of information about places of acquisition of doping means, the fine for physical persons will be 500-1000 manats ($315-$630), 1,000-102,000 manats ($630-$64,350) for officials, and 202,000-303,000 manats ($127,450-$191,200) for the legal entities. Violation of the rules of doping control by sport organizations on physical culture, athletes, coaches, doctors and other professionals will lead to a fine of 1,000-2,000 manats ($630-$1,260).

The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio will begin on August 5 and last till August 21. A record number of countries will participate in a record number of sports. More than 10,500 athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees, including first time entrants Kosovo and South Sudan, are scheduled to take part.

With 306 sets of medals, The games will feature 28 Olympic sports — including rugby sevens and golf, which were added by the International Olympic Committee in 2009. These sporting events will take place at 33 venues in the host city and at 5 venues in the cities of Brazilian Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Brasilia and Manaus cities.

US Gymnast Camilla Feeley: “Excellent fans gathered at the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku”

Excellent fans gathered at the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku, US gymnast Camilla Feeley, participating in FIG World Cup Final in Rhythmic Gymnastics, told reporters in Baku July 23.

The gymnast says she really liked to perform in Baku.

Feeley also said she was a little nervous at first, but thinks she had performed well.
The FIG World Cup Final in Rhythmic Gymnastics will last until July 24, giving a unique opportunity to watch the performances of eminent gymnasts from 17 countries two weeks prior to the Rio Olympics.

Twenty-six gymnasts and nine teams will compete for medals in the all-around on the first two days of competitions. Apparatus finals will be held on the event’s last day.

A traditional Gala will be held on July 24 as part of the FIG World Cup Final in Rhythmic Gymnastics in Baku.

This month Azerbaijan’s capital Baku will become a paradise for sport fans, since the country has scheduled several major international sporting events.

Russian famous tourist service included Baku in Top 3 most popular cities to visit sporting events in May for Russian tourists.

The “City of Winds” Baku going to host Tour d`Azerbaijan, was placed second following Moscow, which will host Ice Hockey World Championship and leaving behind Barcelona to host Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe.

The UCI 2.1 five-day Tour d’Azerbaidjan stage race held from May 4 to 8 will involve 21 teams from 19 countries. Tour d’Azerbaidjan 2016 will be the fifth edition of the event, which started in 2012 as the Heydar Aliyev Anniversary Tour (U23) and in 2012 – the tour became an annual event, later being transformed into Tour d’Azerbaidjan.

The international tour will again take the peloton on a trip across Azerbaijan – from the Caspian shores to the Caucasus Mountains. The race will be held across Baku, Sumgayit, Absheron, Ismayilli, Gabala, Mingachevir and Sheki.

Recently, Baku once again proved that the city is one of the leading sports capitals, by holding Baku Marathon-2016, which brought together 7,000 runners to overcome a 21km distance.

To date, such marathons have been held in London, Paris, Boston, New York, Chicago, Berlin, Barcelona, Istanbul and other cities and by hosting the event Baku stood on a par with these cities.

Up to now, Azerbaijan has successfully hosted over 300 international sports events, including European and world championships, which increased the international Olympic family`s confidence in the country.

This summer Baku will host one of the world’s richest forms of motorsport to be held on the streets of the country’s booming capital Baku for the first time. Scheduled for June 17-19 the Baku City Circuit will be the second longest F1 track on the calendar, with a length slightly over six kilometers as an anti-clockwise layout.

With the brand-new Formula 1 GRAND PRIX OF EUROPE taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, this summer, the 2016 Formula 1 season is set to be one of the most fascinating in years.
