Azerbaijani & American artists to present “Diversity”

Art Tower Gallery invites art lovers to enjoy the final exhibition within the project “Art expedition” on March 13, Trend Life reported.

Entitled “Diversity”, the expo will feature works created during a joint workshop of Azerbaijani and American artists.

American artists Jacob Marty and Shane Guffogg and Azerbaijani masters  Eldar Babazadeh, Namig Ismayilzada Fidan Kim, Sala Mammadov, Ilgar Tahiri, Eldar Hasanov, Roya Hasanova created worked together during a month.

The project aims at showing the view of artists from different countries, as well as promoting Azerbaijani traditions and culture. It also helps to exchange artistic experience and to strengthen international cultural cooperation.

As part of the project, the foreign guests got acquainted with the achievements of Azerbaijani fine arts, creative people and leading exhibition venues in the city.

Every Saturday and Sunday, everyone could visit the Art Tower gallery and view the process of creating art by talented artists.

The exhibition is organized by the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan, the Administration of State Historical and Architectural Reserve “Icherisheher” , NGO Arts Council Azerbaijan with support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Azerbaijani Music featured in the new book “The Music of Central Asia” published in USA.

The Music of Central Asia surveys the rich and diverse musical life of a region once at the center of the trans-Eurasian Silk Road trade that has reemerged in our own time as a crucial arena of global geopolitics. Developed both as a resource for Central Asians to learn about the musical heritage of their own region and to introduce this heritage to readers and listeners worldwide

A companion website (www.musicofcentralasia.org) provides access to some 189 audio and video examples, listening guides and study questions, and transliterations and translations of the performed texts.

The Music of Central Asia include chapter “New Images of Azerbaijani Mugham in the Twentieth Century” from the book “Music of Azerbaijan” by Azerbaijani musicologist, Professor Aida Huseynova.

Azerbaijani composer Fikret Amirov remembered in Los Angeles

Azerbaijan’s Consulate General in Los Angeles hosted on January 13, 2017 an event dedicated to famous Azerbaijani composer Fikret Amirov (1922-84). Members of the “Save a Heart” Foundation of the world-renowned Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of Los Angeles attended the event.

Opening the event, Azerbaijan’s Consul General Nasimi Aghayev informed the guests about the composer’s life and immortal works. Aghayev noted that with his music Amirov enriched not only the Azerbaijani music, but also made tremendous contributions to the world music earning much international recognition. The Consul General mentioned that at the invitation of the U.S. State Department an exclusive group of just four Soviet composers, led by Dmitri Shostakovich, travelled to the U.S. in 1959. Stressing the fact that one of these composers representing the entire Soviet classical music was Amirov, the Consul General said that this was illustrative of the importance attached to the great composer’s music. Aghayev mentioned that as part of the tour, the delegation also visited California. Noting that Amirov’s music found much recognition and admiration in the U.S. as well, the Consul General said that his works were performed by symphonic orchestras of New York, Philadelphia and Houston under the leadership of Leopold Stokowski, one of the leading conductors of the 20th century. Aghayev also mentioned that the World Champion Ice Skater from the U.S. Michelle Kwan used Fikret Amirov’s symphonic mugham “Gulustan Bayati-Shiraz” in her skating program “Taj Mahal” in 1997.

Speaking afterwards, the president of the “Save a Heart” Foundation Dr Yzhar Charuzi and the member of the Foundation Esphir Blaugrund expressed appreciation for Amirov’s music and thanked the Consulate General for the opportunity to get to know the whole richness of the Azerbaijani music and culture more and more though joint events.

Then Amirov’s “1001 Nights” ballet was screened. The ballet was received by the audience with much applause and admiration.

 

“Leyli and Majnun” opera presented in New York, NY

“Leyli and Majnun” opera by famous composer Uzeyir Hajibayli was presented in New York, US.

The Mark Morris Dance Group’s new collaboration with the Silk Road Ensemble featured legendary mugham vocalist Alim Qasimov and his daughter Fargana Qasimova.

All pieces in this medley are based on the melodic patterns of Bayati Shiraz, which is one of the major mughams of Azerbaijani music. The medley opened with the famous Azerbaijani folk song. The second part of this composition featured the actual mugham Bayati Shiraz where both singers and instrumentalists demonstrated their ability to improvise.

Alim Qasimov, occupies a unique and honorable place in Azerbaijan’s national music history. Qasimov is revered as a National Treasure of Azerbaijan, and he also has enjoyed substantial acclaim abroad.

SAPAR Contemporary Gallery in New York Featuring the Original Works of Azerbaijani Artist Faig Ahmed – Source Code

Faig’s US solo exhibition, Source Code, is open until January 5.

Faig Ahmed graduated from the Sculpture Department of Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Art in 2004. He represented Azerbaijan at the nation’s inaugural pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and again in 2013. The artist was nominated for the Jameel Prize 3 at Victoria and Albert Museum. His works are in public collections including Los Angeles County Museum, Seattle Art Museum, and Palm Springs Museum of Art. This year Ahmed’s works have been featured in several important museum group shows including shows at the Museum of Fine Art Boston, Bellevue Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland, Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, and Museum of Old and New Art, Tasmania.

Emin TV Concert to Air Nationwide Across the USA on PBS

EMIN TV CONCERT SPECIAL TO AIR NATIONWIDE ACROSS THE USA IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER

A spectacular concert from EMIN – recorded live for TV in St. Petersburg this summer – will begin airing in the United States this weekend on the premier U.S. broadcast network PBS. The show EMIN LIVE FROM RUSSIA WITH DAVID FOSTER is a 90-minute program featuring the incredible talents of EMIN and his guests Ani Lorak, Polina Gagarina and American music legend David Foster. The backdrop for this concert is the world-famous Winter Palace (Hermitage) where EMIN performed to a crowd of almost 50,000 people who packed into Palace Square. This is one of the largest concert audiences in PBS TV history, and EMIN is one of only a handful of artists ever to perform in front of the Hermitage others have included Madonna, Elton John and The Rolling Stones.

This concert showcases some of the tracks from EMIN’s newly released CD Love Is a Deadly Game as well as many beloved classic songs such as “Mack The Knife”, “Unchained Melody” and “You Are So Beautiful”. He is accompanied throughout the show by 16 time Grammy Award winning musician, composer and performer David Foster – who has been responsible for crafting the superstar careers of Michael Buble, Josh Groban and many more. During the concert, Foster stops the show to proclaim to EMIN: “listen to what I am about to say to you … America is gonna love you!”.

Also, appearing in the show are two of Russia’s best loved artists – Ani Lorak and Polina Gagarina – who join EMIN for the emotional duets “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” and “Always on My Mind”.

The first airing of the concert in America will be this Saturday November 26 in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and a dozen more cities across the USA. It will then continue to be broadcast throughout December including multiple airings in Miami (WPBT TV) beginning on December 3rd and will be seen on PBS’ #1 channel in the USA (WLIW TV) in New York beginning on December 2nd.

A premiere of the film “Ali and Nino” was held in New York

alininosunshineA premiere of the film “Ali and Nino”, shot on the basis of the novel of the same name, the world best-seller by Kurban Said, was held in New York.

The screening took place in the famous cinema “Sunshine” of New York, Azertac reported.

The film is produced by Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Leyla Aliyeva and Chris Tike and directed by Asif Kapadia. The Academy Award winner, Christopher Hampton, wrote the script based on the novel by Kurban Said.

Chris Tike, addressing the event, emphasized that tolerance and multiculturalism are one of the most current questions of our generation and time, and noted that in this context the movie “Ali and Nino” sends an important message to society and people.

Along with such world famous figures of the film industry as Chris Tike, special guests such as Adam Bakri, player of the main character, and Mendy Patinkin were invited to the event.

Bakri, who addressed the audience, noted that the movie is a history of the strong love, which united different people from different places.

Ambassador of Azerbaijan in the U.S., Elin Suleymanov , for his part, emphasized that the novel reflects an important part of the history and culture of Azerbaijan and the region.

He also noted that the film will be able to play an interesting role in understanding of national identities in the region and their mutual relations.

The movie “Ali and Nino” was welcomed by audience with great interest and cheers. After demonstration of the film, the audience noted that the movie made a great emotional impression on them.

The movie “Ali and Nino” will be shown at many cinemas of New York.

Oscar-winning Indo-British filmmaker Asif Kapadia’s film ‘Ali and Nino’ is a tale of epic love. Ali and Nino are upper-class teenagers living in Baku, the oil-rich capital of Azerbaijan, which at the beginning of the 20th century was a melting pot of different cultures.

Despite differences in cultures, they have loved each other since childhood. He is an Azerbaijani Muslim, and she is a Georgian Christian-but despite their cultural differences, they love each other and get married despite the disapproval of their parents.  Then the Great War breaks out, and things take a turn for the worse.

The shooting took place in Baku, including the streets of the historic Icherisheher (Old City) and in different places of the capital, as well as in Gobustan and Khynalyg. The film’s cast is international, with Maria Valverde and Adam Bakri in the main roles.

“Seven Beauties” by prominent composer Gara Garayev screened in Los Angeles

Azerbaijan’s Consulate General in Los Angeles hosted on November 4, 2016 a screening of the Azerbaijani ballet “Seven Beauties”.  Screened was the version of the ballet, which had been performed to great acclaim in October 2014 by San Diego Ballet in San Diego – California’s second largest city – to a crowd of 3,000. This 2014 premiere of the ballet took place with the support of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles.

The screening on November 4 was attended by members of the “Save a Heart” Foundation of the world-famous Cedars-Sinai Hospital, including the 2013 Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry Dr Arieh Warshel, as well as other lovers of classical music.

Highlighting the history of Azerbaijan’s rich culture, Consul General Nasimi Aghayev noted that the “Seven Beauties” ballet had been composed by famous Azerbaijani composer Gara Garayev, based on the motives of the great Azerbaijani poet Nizami Ganjavi’s same-name poem (1197), and staged on November 6, 1952 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Speaking of the composer’s life and immortal works, the Consul General mentioned that Garayev travelled to the U.S. in 1961 to attend the Los Angeles Music Festival, where his other ballet “Path of Thunder” was performed by the Festival’s symphonic orchestra, conducted by two-time Oscar-winning composer and musician Franz Waxman.

Azerbaijani composer Arzu Abbasova has won the 4th MuSE Young Composers Competition held in New York

Young Azerbaijani composer Arzu Abbasova has won the 4th MuSE Young Composers Competition held in New York, the USA.

Arzu , a graduate of the music school named after Sharoyev in Baku, had presented her composition “Pole Star” at the competition of the young composers, Azertac reported.

The winners’ works will be performed as part of Sounds of Arts Festival (SOAF) on November 19 at the Secret Theatre in Long Island City, NY. SOAF is MuSE’s annual week-long arts festival.

Arzu composed Pole Star in 2015. The composition won “Rodniki dushi” competition, which was co-organized by Azerbaijan`s Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Russian Embassy in Baku this April.

Arzu, who is a first year student at the Faculty of International Relations, ADA University, has won a number of international competitions in Russia, USA, Kazakhstan and Serbia.

Multicultural Sonic Evolution (MuSE) was co-founded in 2007 directed by composer Yui Kitamura and percussionist Chihiro Shibayama. The competitions aims to better the world with the power of music.

Through its annual programming, MuSE collaborates with artists from various disciplines and backgrounds in hopes of sharing classical and popular forms of music with the public.

Each concert provides the core members of MuSE and talented soloists and chamber musicians a platform for sharing their craft.

Dancers, actors, film directors, animators and even kimono artists have been invited to collaborate with MuSE throughout the performance season.
